bee n mossBack to the garden

The greenhouse

Experiments
under glass.

Things grown for curiosity, or for the garden’s own use. Most will never leave the glass, and that is the point.

Release planned

Mycelium

The garden’s own control room. One private portal deploys, watches, and backs up every app backend and this website on the garden’s server. Like the fungal network under a forest floor, it stays out of sight: it has no public address, and only devices on the garden’s private network can find it.

Planted Oct 2026

What it does

  • Deploy each project from git, follow the output live, and roll back when something goes wrong.
  • Edit environment variables with a diff before saving, and watch containers, logs, and server health.
  • Encrypted offsite backups of every database and project, with a step-by-step restore guide.
  • Manage websites, certificates, and files without opening a terminal.
  • Security checks for the server and container images, with alerts to a phone.
  • Passkey sign-in only, a server agent limited to a fixed list of actions, and a tamper-evident audit log of everything done.

How it works

  1. Phone or laptop
  2. Private network
  3. Portal, with passkey sign-in
  4. Server agent
  5. Apps, databases, and backups

Built with

  • Go
  • Next.js
  • SQLite
  • Headscale
  • Docker
  • nginx
  • age

To run it

For now it runs only the bee n moss server, and its code is private.

Leaving the glass

A public, free, open-source version (AGPL-3.0) that sets up and runs any Ubuntu or Debian server is planned. First, everything specific to this garden comes out, and a one-run server setup script and documentation go in.

Always experimental

Terrarium

A local chat window for language models: the familiar AI-chat experience, running entirely on your own machine. Nothing leaves the glass.

Planted Sep 2026

The model

Apple’s on-device foundation model

The model behind Apple Intelligence, served on the Mac by apfel through an OpenAI-style chat endpoint. No cloud service is involved.

What it does

  • Conversations in a sidebar: start a new chat, return to an old one, or delete it.
  • Each chat names itself from its first message.
  • Every reply is answered with the whole conversation as context.
  • Enter to send, Shift+Enter for a new line.
  • Chat history saved in a local database, so it survives restarts.

How it works

  1. Your browser
  2. Terrarium
  3. apfel on your Mac
  4. Apple’s on-device model

Built with

  • Next.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Prisma
  • Docker Compose

To run it

A Mac with Apple Intelligence, running apfel. The model runs on the Mac itself, outside any container.

Room under glass

The next experiment will grow here, for as long as it stays interesting.
